Elon, derived from the Hebrew word for 鈥渙ak鈥� is situated on a 656-acre campus, in the town of Elon, NC which is designated as a botanical garden. It has been voted the top college in the nation dedicated to student success and boasts among the highest percentage of students conducting undergraduate research with faculty. The school has been shooting up in rankings (now, ranked top school in the south according to US News and World Report) and is becoming more popular and much more selective year over year.聽 One reason is its commitment to engaged learning. To graduate, students must participate in at least two Elon Experiences, which include study abroad, undergraduate research, internships, service-learning, writing-intensive courses and living-learning communities.聽 The 4-1-4 academic calendar makes it easy for students to take the month of January to focus on a study or activity at home or abroad.聽 聽Their most notable majors are business and communications, and students take advantage of incredible resources, including a full trading room and TV studio. Founded in 1926, Sarah Lawrence sits on a quaint, 44-acre tract in the city of Yonkers, just north of New York Cit. Originally founded as a women鈥檚 college, Sarah Lawrence became co-ed in 1968. Its curriculum is modeled after the small seminars and 1:1 student faculty tutorials pioneered by Oxford and Cambridge. Regardless of what majors students choose to pursue, they tend to share a love of literature and excel in the writing-heavy curriculum. Though there are formal grades, more important is the student鈥檚 portfolio of work, accompanied by in-depth, written evaluations from professors, filed twice a year. Writing, literature, and visual and performing arts are among the college鈥檚 traditional strengths, and other popular concentrations include filmmaking, foreign languages, biology, and computer science. Aspiring psychologists鈥攁lso a significant group on campus鈥攎ay participate in fieldwork at the college鈥檚 Early Childhood Center. The premed program, more structured than other offerings, places nearly all eligible graduates into medical school. Because of the college鈥檚 emphasis on personal relationships with professors, even the registration process requires deep thought: students interview teachers to ensure that courses fit into their academic plans.

Founded in 1592 by Queen Elizabeth as an Irish counterpart to Oxford and Cambridge, Trinity College is the largest and most distinguished of the seven universities in Ireland. Located in the heart of Dublin, Trinity is in easy walking distance to shops, cafes, and museums (the famous Book of Kells is actually located on campus, in Trinity College Library) and to hot spots for students to relax and socialize, such as Grafton Street and Temple Bar.

Unlike other universities in Ireland which follow the three-year UK model, Trinity offers a four-year undergraduate program parallel to the four 鈥渁ncient鈥� universities in Scotland. Academics are organized around three schools in each of the traditional areas: arts, humanities, and social sciences; engineering, math, and science; and health sciences. While there are no core classes, students are required to complete a research project in order to graduate. Each student is assigned a peer mentor and a faculty tutor who not one of his or her professors, who will be available for personal, academic, and professional advice over four years.
